How Much Do Braces Cost?

When it comes to orthodontics, the old adage that “you get what you pay for” is accurate. Orthodontic treatment can give you a healthy smile and functioning mouth, but it does require an investment on your part. Here at Westfall Orthodontics, one of the most common concerns patients have is how much braces will actually cost them. The answer to that actually varies from case to case! Every smile is unique and each patient responds to our customized treatment plans in their own way. Generally speaking, there are several contributing factors that go into treatment fees, including:

  • the type of orthodontic appliance
  • if the braces are for a child or an adult
  • the orthodontic issues being treated
  • the estimated treatment length
  • if the patient’s insurance covers orthodontics
  • the orthodontist providing treatment
  • the area in which the patient resides and receives treatment

These each play a significant role in the total cost of treatment. Take the type of appliance, for example. Traditional metal braces tend to be one of our least expensive options, while clear braces or Invisalign aligners may cost slightly more. The same can be true for the age of the patient, as orthodontic treatment for children and teens will often be slightly less expensive than treatment for adults. Similarly, a patient with a complex case may require longer treatment times, more work for the orthodontist, and more follow-up appointments in the office than a patient who has mild orthodontic issues. This can translate to higher overall fees when all is said and done.

Another important factor to consider is the pricing structure the chosen orthodontist has set up, which will be based in part on the region in which they practice. The total cost of a patient’s treatment will also depend on whether or not they have dental insurance that will pay any portion of their orthodontic treatment. As you can see, there’s quite a lot to consider when putting it all together! Let’s take a closer look below at what treatment with braces includes, what the average cost is, and what payment options we have available to you!

What does the total cost of braces treatment generally include?

Nobody likes hidden fees or unwelcome surprises. At Westfall Orthodontics, we’re transparent about all of our treatment fees and will make sure you understand exactly what’s included before you begin your orthodontic journey! Our individualized treatment plans contain everything you’ll need to achieve and maintain a beautiful smile, such as:

Is there an average cost for braces?

As we discussed above, there are many factors that go into determining the exact cost of treatment for each patient. That’s why there is no “one size fits all” answer for how much braces cost. We can still look at the averages, though! For a child, treatment with braces can run anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces will usually be about $5-8K in total.

Will dental insurance cover orthodontic treatment?

While there are a number of dental insurance plans that will cover orthodontic treatment in part or full, the coverage rules and policies can often be fairly confusing. Fortunately, our team has years of experience in working with insurance companies and will work with you to ensure you receive the maximum coverage from your plan!

Dr. Westfall won’t recommend treatment based solely on whether or not it is covered by insurance. Instead, you can expect a customized plan that’s been created to address your unique needs, lifestyle, and goals. Once you’ve had your consultation and been presented with a treatment plan, you should check with your provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.

For your convenience, we’ll be happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses are estimated before the treatment process begins. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we will reconcile the account. Patients will be responsible for any underpayment at this point.

If insurance will not cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?

If braces are deemed to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs associated with them can sometimes be tax deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions would kick in. You should keep track of all expenses associated with your braces treatment if you want to deduct the costs. This would include co-pays and check-up visits.
